KoH: The Last Moment

When everything inside looks like everything I hate

For those who haven't been following me for the past six years: I used to write and draw a webcomic called "King of Hearts," about a reluctant king, Telion, who found himself a lookalike to take his place while he gallivanted anonymously about the country. Later he returned in disguise to check on his replacement, a gypsy girl called Joi (Telion wasn't especially rugged and manly.) He stayed in the castle for several months, without letting anyone know who he really was, slowly falling in love with her, while she suffered a great deal, physically and mentally, to protect the "missing" king.

One of the bravest things he ever did was confessing the lie, knowing she might never forgive him for using her.

This painting was inspired by that scene. He shed his disguise and stole one moment of happiness, holding her, before she turned and he had to tell the truth.

Again, the lines were done September 2009, the "coloring" today. I couldn't get the perspective of the background right--~Cheeko-001 saw the attempts--and so after all this time I decided I'd rather have a finished, background-less painting than abandon it forever because of my frustrations with the perspective.

I used the same shading style as I used to use for webcomic pages.
